WOMENS HOCKEY: UCD and Trinity begin their Leinster Div 1 League campaign with home ties against Loreto and Hermes respectively, with Trinity especially hoping for a marked improvement on last season, WRITES John Stokes

Mary Logue, the former Muckross international, is the new UCD coach and has previously been in charge of the Irish U-16 and U-18 teams.

"I'm very excited about this coming season. The team showed they can score goals, and although they finished a creditable fifth in the table, with better defending we can achieve a higher ratio of league wins,'' said Logue.

The team's defensive shortcomings received a timely boost with the four newcomers coming on board including three defenders.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY WEEKEND PREVIEW: THE STUDENTS of Trinity and UCD get their league seasons under way tomorrow against Hermes and Loreto, respectively, with UCD beginning life under Mary Logue, the former Irish captain, who has taken over as coach.

Having coached at underage level for Ireland , Logue is no stranger to the role, but this will be her debut in club hockey with a gifted UCD side. They have been joined this season by Ireland under-18 goalkeeper Stella Davis and former Wesley College team-mate Leigh Pelow, with Liz McInerney arriving from Hermes, Julie Garvey from Three Rock and Laura Wilson from Belfast Harlequins.

UCD had a steady season last time around, finishing fifth. But Trinity struggled, avoiding relegation by just two points, and open against a Hermes side intent on putting last week's defeat to Railway Union behind them.
